Travel For IC Patients: Part 2
For those patients with Interstitial Cystitis, traveling can prove to very challenging, especially for those with severe IC symptoms. But that doesn’t mean that traveling is impossible, it just means that with some adjustments and careful preparation, trips can be made a little easier.
Try some of these suggestions to make traveling with IC more manageable:
- When traveling by car, keep a portable potty or a bed pan with you in the car. There are some IC patients who have installed portable toilets in their vans.
- When traveling by plane, arrange ahead of time for an aisle seat that is near the restrooms. You can minimize vibrations by sitting on pillows. Try not to drink very much before and during the flight.
- Women with IC can wear absorbent pads and men can use a condom catheter while flying or traveling where access to a restroom is restricted.
- Try not to travel during peak seasons when things are more hectic and unpredictable.
- Find out in advance the location of restrooms along your traveling route.
